Exclusive report from the presentation of the CV90

The ceremonial unveiling of the CV9035 MkIV infantry fighting vehicle for the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic (OS SR) in Sweden delivered important statements, concrete numbers, and a clear message: Slovakia is entering a new era of mechanized forces. The report aired in the program “Code: Defence” on TA3 television featured perspectives from key defense representatives of both Slovakia and Sweden, as well as industrial partners involved in the project.

Tommy Gustafsson-Rask - Managing Director of BAE Systems Hägglunds, emphasized that the uniqueness and success of the CV90 lies in achieving the right balance between its core attributes – mobility, firepower (a 35 mm cannon with programmable ammunition), and multi-layered protection. This includes ballistic protection, mine resistance, an active protection system, low radar and thermal signature, and a multi-tiered defense against drones, ranging from detection and electronic countermeasures to physical neutralization. As highlighted in the report, “The best protection is not being detected.

Slovak Minister of Defence - Robert Kaliňák described the CV9035 MkIV as one of the most advanced vehicles in its category. He also referred to the important decisions that had to be made when specifying the Slovak configuration. One of the key topics was the choice of cannon caliber, explaining why the 35 mm variant was chosen instead of the standard 30 mm. He confirmed that the first vehicles are expected to arrive in Slovakia later this year. At the same time, he mentioned the potential for further cooperation with BAE Systems Hägglunds on additional projects, including the possible procurement of new tanks based on the CV90 platform.

Miroslav Lorinc - Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic, clearly defined their role: 150 vehicles (152 under the contract) will enable the rearmament of one mechanized brigade, replace outdated Soviet-era equipment, and fulfill Slovakia’s commitment to building a heavy brigade within NATO. “In the end, territory can only be secured through the physical presence of a soldier,” he stated in reference to the continued relevance of heavy equipment in the era of drones.

More than 40 Slovak companies are involved in the project, including KOVAL SYSTEMS, a. s. In the report, Ján Michálek - Chairman of the Board and Sales Director of our company, highlighted several key facts: “We are the manufacturer and assembly company for the turrets, exactly as you see them on this new MkIV vehicle. The turret will leave our production facility in precisely this condition, ready for installation on the chassis.”

He emphasized that this is far more than “just tightening a few screws.” The turret is a highly complex system consisting of approximately 2,000 manufactured parts and more than 1,000 purchased components. In addition to production and assembly, the company ensures that each turret leaves the facility fully tested, commissioned, programmed, and calibrated.

“It represents a new generation of the vehicle and all the systems integrated into the turret. It is a unique vehicle. It is no coincidence that it is considered the best in its category.”  These statements clearly demonstrate the technological and manufacturing capabilities of the Slovak defense industry. The CV90 project is not merely about delivering equipment. It is about technology transfer, expanding production capacities, and establishing long-term industrial cooperation.

Swedish Minister for Defence - Pål Jonson noted that the CV90 is now operated by ten countries, including the Nordic and Baltic states, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, and Ukraine. The broader the user base, the more intensive the joint development, exchange of experience, and continued modernization.
